Principle #3: The Power Of One Putt Forward
Once upon a time, the badge ‘Made in Japan’ was the equivalent of 'Made in Taiwan'. But the Japanese came to establish a reputation for high production standards, build quality, efficiency and innovation. Japanese products and technology are now highly sought-after in Western countries that were formerly dominated by American or European products and brands.
How did this turnaround happen?
No doubt, an insistence on restoring national pride after the decimation of World War 2 played a considerable part. Honour and pride in work are amongst the most important traits of the Japanese psyche. Yet it’s another concept that has driven Japan’s march to the top- a concept known as kaizen. This term constantly features in their language and covers a wide range of areas: kaizen in their personal relationships, kaizen in their martial arts training, kaizen in their production line or business success.
Tony Robbins coined his own term for this concept- Constant And Noticeable Improvement- or CANI. Business (like life itself) should be focused on the concept of CANI.
It’s like being on a golf course. If you aim to get a hole in 1 and will settle for nothing less, how many times will you have to drive that ball until it happens? How much time will you waste doing that? Good luck trying to get that hole in 1 after dark!
I've found that the real goal is to be moving forward, 1 putt at a time. Make just one little improvement each day. It might not feel like real progress by days’ end- but after a year? You definitely notice the improvement!
Whether it's in my finances...
Or in my career...
Or in my relationships...
If I can improve just a little bit in one area each day- then I've had success.
Great projects, professional or artistic, progress one day at a time. I don't have all the answers or solutions I need right now, but that's ok. Provided I wake up tomorrow having made an advancement over where I am today in at least one main category, in some form or another, then that's a win for me.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
The game of life gets better with just one putt forward per day. ..
