Sitting at your desk, getting tasks done...
The occasional rise to grab another coffee, take a bathroom break or chat with your co-workers (if you have any)...
Sit back down, go again...
Remember where you left off. Glance at your watch. Think...
Check your e-mail. Check the clock...
Think...
Another bathroom break (that coffee is doing its’ job and giving you another excuse to procrastinate- hooray!)
Come back, re-jog your memory and get back to work...
Glance at the clock again...
Count down the time until you can leave, or you can finish up for the day without feeling guilty about it...
Return the following morning, believing that doing the same thing you did yesterday (and the week, month or year before) will serve as the backdrop for your amazing success story that begins today. Sound familiar?
Lunacy!
That old saying about doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results is truth. Being stuck in one place can be a real drain on your inspiration and your creative thinking. If you work in a profession that rewards you for your creative thinking abilities and the opening paragraphs sum up your typical day, something has to change, and ASAP! May I suggest you begin by reading ‘The Four Hour Work Week’ if you think I’m being dramatic?
Our weeks are busy enough as it is. For your efforts to manifest into something even greater than you envisage right now, your brain needs regular exercise. The key to stop your inspiration from turning stale? The magic formula to maximising the output of that grey, God-given power station in your skull? Give the rest of your body regular exercise! There are a number of ways you can do this. Some people will go for a swim or a surf, others will walk or jog. My advice, from personal experience?
Get on your bike! I have found that cycling at a steady pace, for an hour or longer, inspires the creative subconscious aspect of the mind to roll at a similar speed. This is where ‘amazing’ begins to happen. Venturing into the fresh air of the day outside to burn some calories, enjoy the scenery and cruise along the roads, streets and bike-paths is (more often than not) just the thing to put the mind at peace- and in turn prepares the soil that is perfect for sprouting the seeds of revelation. It may not just be about something in your professional life, like a brilliant new marketing idea or strategic alliance. It might be a life-changing revelation about your personal life, or the flash of an idea about something that would be awesome fun to do!
By the time you get home from your two-wheeled adventure, not only will your body be thanking you for the workout, but you may very well have paragraphs worth of powerful new ideas to scribble down in your to-do list, planner or ideas book. Half the magic comes from creating a place where you can list and itemise these inspirational, sometimes life and career-changing bursts. The other half of the equation?
Don’t just take my word for it- pump up those tyres, charge your iPod, grab your helmet and discover for yourself!
Now I've said that- I'm off to take a ride...
